IRL vs Social Media

What do you do when you find yourself face-to-face with someone you have only met on Facebook or Twitter? Tipping Point Labs made me answer that question on tape.

See for yourself…

What would you do? What do you suggest?

  1. Social Facebook ….

    Okay, just kidding.

The first time I met in person someone I had only known online, I was a tad surprised when they called me jespah instead of Janet (jespah is the userid I often use). It is, well, it’s the name of Elsa’s eldest (male, by the way!) cub in “Born Free”. Not. My. Name.

But it wasn’t done out of malice; it was because that’s how they knew me. And the names are close, anyway. This was back in ’00 and I have found that I mind it less and less and, in fact, sometimes introduce myself as jes.

No one’s called me shrinkingjes yet (or Neuron Robotics) but I imagine that’s coming.

I don’t mind. It is interaction. It is a crossover between two media, and crossing points can sometimes be a tad uneven. Call me jes, call me Janet, whatever, long as we are connecting and conversing and building a relationship. Who cares how we met, or how we first started really talking?

    Long as we talk.
