Scarecrow with a gun?

Here’s the link to a site that shows clearly that the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz has a gun in his hand during a few scenes. This might be news to some people, but it’s the first I heard of it. Perhaps Cecil at the Straight Dope can clarify this issue.
