Long week

January 23, 2008

It’s only Wednesday and I feel like this week has gone on for about 11 days. I’m not exactly clued in to why that is, but I think it’s because I’ve been slightly under the weather with a cold since Saturday and that has been making the days drag on and on.

I can’t imagine what prisoners go through being stuck in a cell for a set period of time that only gets incrementally closer by 24 hours each sunrise.

I’m not complaining. I’m actually thrilled to not be in prison, to be able to breathe fresh air and sit home and watch Tivo when I want. Which brings up a point that Sitboaf made today. He was railing on about our current president (probably an issue that many people could start a diatribe about) and the situation that he’s gotten us into.

I brought up the indelicacies that Bill Clinton performed while in office as a counter to Sitboaf’s point and he nearly lost it. I can see that a sexual act between consenting adults cannot be compared to the deaths of thousands of Americans.

But my point was that the best thing about America is that we have the freedom to experience the full spectrum of situations. We’re not locked away in a country where we have no vote. Or persecuted for our religious beliefs. Or even discriminated against (well, we still might need to do some work there).

Essentially, unlike the prisoners who get to stare out the window through bars, we have the ability to effect change and to take part in the process. That’s one great thing about this country.

Wow. I’m starting to feel better already.

More to come…
